We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment on the other side of the bridge from the Hotel rooms. It had all been modernised recently and everthing was very clean. The kids shared a room with bunk beds and found it to be OK. I had a great soak in the bath that night after doing the walk down the Cataract Gorge to the swimming pool (how lucky the Launceston people are to have such a beautiful asset!). The path is right next door to the Apartments so very convenient. Were able to park right outside our front door. We were only staying overnight after arriving in Tasmania and the Apartment was fine for this. It would also be good for several nights. The only criticism was the pillows - very new and clean but all 4 of us had sore necks in the morning. Close

Hmmm what can I say. I only stayed at these apartments due to hotel vouchers that I had to use before they expired. Given the reviews on here, this is NOT a place that I would have chosen, but stayed tuned, I have a lot to say. On check in, we found that we had to drive 200mtrs up the road to the actual accommodation. We stayed in a two bedroom apartment and I knew that there were stairs to climb, but heck there were lots and it was a REAL struggle to get suitcases, food shopping and extras including a baby and three year old up these stairs. ( no male around to help!) I was happy to stay here based on the refurbishment, and the knowledge that everything was new. All except the outdated tv with only 3 chanels and an old style antenna which didnt really work anyhow. The room was stiffling HOT - you would think with refurbs that they surely would have installed airconditioning - NO.... they only provide useless pedestal fans. What is wrong with this establishment. It was the most uncomfortable 2 days stay and the first night I lay ontop of the bed absolutely pissed off. I considered uping and moving to another hotel just so I could have aircon. But alas I didnt. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the refubishment is so shoddy, even I think I could have done a better job. If you are going to do something and spend money on it, do it properly. What poor workmanship. The carpet wasnt even glued down to the sides of the stairs, the windows were broken and lights didnt work. And whilst on the subject of lights, my 3 year old decided to try everything out in her bedroom and turned on the bedside light. 30 minutes later, the room was almost on fire. The globe that they had put into the lamp was the wrong one, and the plastic fitting commenced melting and burning. Thank goodness that I had gone upstairs to shut the blinds and heat out to discover the room full of smoke. I raced to get housekeeping who tried to open the windows to let the smoke out, but surprise (actually no surprise) the window was broken! Not a good start. I had requested that a portacot, highchair and stair gate be in the room, but it wasnt. I had to go to the housekeeping room (which was left wide open) and help myself. The things I chose were recently purchased which was good as it was clean enough to put my baby into. The stairgate rendered useless as the stairs railings were not flush with the wall so it couldnt be installed. The kitchen had all new appliances but who carpets a kitchen?? I would hate to see this place in a few months time. It will be absolutely disgusting with food and the likes, squashed into the carpet. The sliding door had a nail in it to prevent it opening so we couldnt even get any respite from the heat by opening it and letting the breeze in. At night the animals transcend from the rock faces and all night all you can hear is banging and fighting. Of course not the hotels fault but it didnt help trying to sleep. The upside - well not much to mention. Ok for one nights stay I suppose. The location is good as you can walk along the beautiful gorge. Oh one other thing - the housekeeping staff are excellent and go out of their way - Special mention to Donna. She was great and friendly too! Close

We have just stayed here for a week with our two teenage daughters. The Penny Royal has so much potential it really occupies a prime location in Launceston at the entry to the Gorge. The two bed unit we stayed in had recently been refurbished but sadly everything has been done very cheaply and shows. The kitchen is extremely basic a microwave and two hot plate rings and a small fridge. The furnishings are again basic. The new carpet shows every bit of fluff and dirt and the cleaners do not vacuum it and yet in the room there is no means of doing it yourself.The window of our lounge in the apartment would not stay open and we reported in on arrival and still has not been fixed we were given two bit of wood to prop it open on arrival which was actually my husbands idea when the poor receptionist had no idea what to do. The restaurant was a big dissapointment however the waitress was great and trying to make the best of a bad situation :) We ordered 4 different meals none of which they could do so in the end we asked what can you supply and the choice was extremely limited. My final opinion is the stafff at this hotel are really great and friendly but the refurbishment is being done too cheaply and is not really improving the hotel which is sad when you can see the potential!!!
